Which gypsies invented gypsy jazz?

How did Django Reinhardt develop gypsy jazz guitar?

Maccaferri and Selmer style guitars?

How are Gypsy Jazz guitar set up?

Gypsy guitars tend to be set up high for strong gypsy players.
The action at the first fret is set by the zero fret.  The height at
the bridge is generally pretty high.  Low E string at about 9/64"
and high E at 7/64".  This allows heavy playing and a very
clear sound.

Many players like the action a little lower.  We can do this, but
it is a one-way process on the Gitane line because we actually
have to remove wood.  Normal acoustic setup is 8/64" at the
low E string and 6/64" at the high E string.  We can usually go
a bit lower, but it isn’t generally necessary with the fairly light
strings generally used on gypsy jazz guitars.

What kind of strings should I use for Gypsy Jazz?

Gypsy guitar players generally use light strings wound in silver
plated copper.  These strings give the right edge.  Brands
used are headed up by Argentine, followed by Galli, John
Pearse Nuages, Dell Arte, GHS Gypsy Strings, Saga Gitane
strings (a budget alternative), and Newtone.  Generally
standard acoustic guitar strings don’t work well on Gypsy
guitars.

Jazz guitar players vary in their choice depending on whether
they’re playing acoustic or acoustic electric, where the pickup
must see the strings.  Choices are legion.  We like EXP 13s for
acoustic work.
